Are scented candles toxic? What the evidence actually shows

Are scented candles toxic to breathe?
For most people burning the occasional candle in a ventilated room, the evidence does not support alarm, but there are real, specific things worth managing rather than ignoring. Any candle, scented or not, produces some soot and combustion byproducts, and a candle burned with a long or untrimmed wick, or one that flickers and smokes, produces noticeably more particulate matter, which is the part that actually matters for indoor air. The fragrance itself can release volatile organic compounds and, in some cases, low levels of formaldehyde as it burns. Regulatory and industry reviews have generally found that emissions from normal candle use fall well below health-based limits, so the honest framing is that a smoking candle in a closed room is the issue, not the idea of a scented candle as such. If you have asthma or another respiratory condition, or a very small space, that is the situation where minimizing soot and ventilating matters most.
Is paraffin wax worse than soy or beeswax?
This is the claim people worry about most, and the truth is more measured than either side of the argument suggests. Paraffin is a petroleum-derived wax, and the concern is that burning it releases combustion byproducts; the frequently repeated idea that paraffin candles emit toluene and benzene at meaningful levels traces largely to a single unpublished study that has not been reliably replicated. Later research comparing waxes generally found that the wax type matters less to emissions than how the candle is made and burned, with wick design, fragrance load, and burn behavior driving soot more than paraffin versus soy. That said, soy, coconut, and beeswax are renewable rather than petroleum-based, tend to burn a little cooler and slower, and are the choice many people prefer for that reason. The realistic position is that a well-made paraffin candle burned properly is not the hazard it is sometimes described as, and a clean-burning soy or beeswax candle with a cotton wick is a reasonable step up if you burn candles often.
Do candle wicks contain lead?
Not in candles sold legally in the United States, and this is a case where a real historical problem has largely been fixed. Some older and imported candles used a metal core, occasionally lead, in the wick to keep it upright, and burning those did release lead into the air, which is a genuine exposure worth avoiding. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission banned lead wicks in 2003, so candles made and sold to that standard use cotton or paper-cored wicks instead. The practical caution is around very cheap, unbranded, or imported novelty candles that may not meet the standard: if a wick has a stiff metal core visible when you look at the unburned candle, do not burn it. Choosing candles with a plain cotton or wood wick from a maker that names its materials removes the question entirely.
What is the 'fragrance' in a scented candle, and is it a concern?
The word fragrance on a candle label can stand for a blend of many individual aromatic chemicals that the maker is not required to itemize, and that opacity is the legitimate part of the concern rather than a specific proven harm. Some fragrance blends contain compounds like phthalates used to carry scent, and the broader phthalate question is one we cover on its own; others use synthetic musks or allergens that can irritate sensitive people. When a fragrance burns, it can release low levels of volatile organic compounds and sometimes trace formaldehyde. For most people in a ventilated room this is a minor exposure, but if you are sensitive, pregnant, or simply prefer to know what you are breathing, the useful move is to choose candles scented with disclosed essential oils or a fragrance the maker is transparent about, rather than an undisclosed 'fragrance' with no detail. How do I burn candles more safely?
A few simple habits cut the real-world exposure far more than switching wax type alone does, because most candle soot comes from how it burns rather than what it is made of. Trim the wick to about a quarter-inch before every burn, since a long wick is the main cause of a smoking, sooty flame. Keep candles out of drafts, which make the flame flicker and produce more particulate, and burn them in a room with some ventilation rather than a small closed space. Let the candle burn long enough on the first use to melt the wax across the full surface, which helps it burn evenly afterward, and do not burn any candle for many hours on end. If the flame is smoking or the glass is blackening, put it out, let it cool, and trim the wick.
