Microplastics in the ocean, and what it means for what you eat

How do microplastics get into the ocean?
They arrive by two main routes, and it helps to keep them separate. The first is plastic litter that breaks down: bottles, bags, packaging, and abandoned fishing gear that reach the sea and are slowly fragmented by sunlight, waves, and salt into ever smaller pieces called secondary microplastics, which is why a single lost bottle can eventually become thousands of fragments. The second, and the one people underestimate, is microplastics that enter already small, called primary microplastics: synthetic fibres shed from polyester and acrylic clothing in the wash, dust worn off car tyres and washed down drains, and pellets and microbeads from industry and older cosmetics. Rivers and wastewater carry much of this to the coast, and wind moves lighter particles too. So the ocean's microplastic load is a mix of big plastic slowly crumbling and tiny plastic that was small from the start, and everyday land-based sources feed both.
How much microplastic is actually in the ocean?
The honest answer is that the numbers are large but genuinely uncertain, because the ocean is vast and particles are hard to count, so estimates come as ranges rather than a single figure. International assessments describe many millions of tonnes of plastic entering the sea each year and trillions of microplastic particles distributed through the water column, the surface, and the seabed, with concentrations highest near coastlines, big river mouths, and enclosed seas, and lower in the open ocean. Microplastics have been found everywhere researchers have looked, from Arctic ice to deep-sea sediment, which tells you the distribution is global even if the exact tonnage is debated. The useful takeaway is not a precise number but a direction: the load is significant, it is rising with plastic production, and it is concentrated where people and rivers meet the sea, which is also where much of our seafood comes from.
Do ocean microplastics end up in the food I eat?
To some degree yes, and being specific about where matters more than alarm. The clearest route is seafood, particularly filter-feeding shellfish such as mussels, oysters, and clams, which pump large volumes of water and are eaten whole including the digestive tract, so they carry more measurable microplastic than a fillet of fish where you discard the gut. In finned fish the particles concentrate mostly in the stomach and gut rather than the muscle you actually eat, so trimmed fillets carry less. Beyond seafood, sea salt is a documented route because it is made by evaporating seawater, which leaves any particles behind, and microplastics have also been reported in tap and bottled water and many other foods, so the ocean is one source among several rather than the only one. The practical point is that shellfish eaten whole and sea salt are the ocean-linked foods where the connection is most direct.
Is it still safe to eat fish and seafood?
On the current evidence, yes, and the nutritional case for eating fish remains strong, so this is not a reason to stop. Food-safety bodies that have reviewed microplastics in seafood conclude that, while the particles are clearly present, there is not yet evidence that the amounts typically consumed cause harm to people, partly because most microplastics in fish sit in the gut that is usually removed rather than in the flesh. That is an honest not enough evidence of harm rather than a clean bill of health, and research is active, so the sensible reading is to keep eating fish for its real benefits while making the small, low-cost choices that reduce the most direct exposures. Gutting and filleting fish rather than eating it whole, and being aware that whole small shellfish carry more, are reasonable and undramatic steps that keep the benefits of seafood without ignoring the finding.
Does sea salt contain microplastics?
Studies from several countries have found microplastics in a large share of commercial sea salts, which makes sense given how sea salt is produced: seawater is evaporated and whatever particles it contained are left behind in the crystals. The amounts are small in absolute terms, and researchers generally estimate that the microplastic you would ingest from salt is modest compared with other dietary sources such as drinking water, so it is not a reason for alarm. If you would rather reduce this particular route, rock salt and mined salts come from ancient underground deposits laid down long before plastic existed, so they tend to show less contamination than sea salt evaporated from today's oceans. That is a simple swap for anyone who wants to lower one identifiable source, though it is a minor lever rather than a decisive one.
What can I actually do about microplastics in the ocean?
The most useful actions are the ones that stop microplastics reaching the sea in the first place, because most of it comes from everyday land-based sources rather than litter dropped at the beach. The single biggest household lever is laundry, since synthetic clothing sheds fibres every wash: washing full loads in cold water, washing synthetics less often, and using a fibre-catching filter or bag reduces what goes down the drain toward rivers and the sea. Choosing natural fibres over polyester and acrylic where you can, cutting single-use plastic packaging, and disposing of plastic properly all reduce the raw material that eventually fragments in the water. For your own exposure, filtering drinking water, gutting fish, and choosing mined salt over sea salt address the most direct routes. None of this fixes the ocean alone, but the same steps that lower your exposure also lower your contribution, which is the honest, useful place to focus.
