Tea bags and microplastics: what the evidence actually shows

Do tea bags really release microplastics into the cup?
Many do. A 2019 study in Environmental Science & Technology (Hernandez et al.) brewed a single plastic tea bag at 95 degrees Celsius and measured roughly 11.6 billion microplastic and 3.1 billion nanoplastic particles released into one cup. A 2024 study in Chemosphere (Banaei et al.) confirmed that polypropylene, nylon, and cellulose tea bags all shed particles into hot water, with polypropylene shedding the most. Not every bag is affected: a flat paper bag without a plastic sealant releases far fewer particles than a pyramid-shaped mesh bag made of plastic.
Which tea bags contain plastic?
Two types are the main concern. The newer pyramid or silken mesh bags are frequently made of polypropylene, nylon, or PET, which are plastics. Many conventional flat paper bags are also heat-sealed with a thin polypropylene layer so the edges stay shut in hot water, even though the bag looks like paper. Bags closed with a staple, a fold, or a string-and-tag rather than a heat seal, and bags a brand explicitly labels plastic-free, are the lower-particle options.
Are the microplastics from tea bags harmful?
The exposure is documented; the health effect is still being established, and we will not overstate it. The Hernandez 2019 study exposed water fleas to the released particles and saw behavioral and developmental effects, but that is an animal model, not a human outcome. The European Food Safety Authority has concluded that current evidence does not yet allow a full risk assessment of microplastics in food. We treat cutting an easily avoidable source as a reasonable precaution rather than an emergency.
Does it matter how hot the water is?
Yes. Particle release rises sharply with temperature because heat softens and degrades the polymer mesh. The 2019 study used near-boiling water at 95 degrees Celsius, which is standard for black tea, and that is also where shedding peaked. Brewing green or white tea at a lower temperature releases fewer particles, but the most reliable fix is to remove the plastic from the cup entirely rather than to brew cooler.
Is loose-leaf tea actually plastic-free?
Loose-leaf tea brewed with a stainless steel or glass infuser avoids the bag entirely, so there is no polymer mesh to shed. That is the cleanest option and usually the cheapest per cup. Watch two things: avoid nylon or plastic mesh infuser balls, which reintroduce the problem, and choose a stainless steel basket or a glass teapot with a built-in strainer instead.
What about compostable or 'biodegradable' tea bags?
Read the label carefully. Some bags marketed as biodegradable are made from PLA, a plant-based bioplastic that still sheds particles in hot water and only composts in an industrial facility, not a home bin. The 2024 Chemosphere study found cellulose-based bags also released particles, though fewer than polypropylene. A genuinely unbleached paper bag with no plastic sealant, or loose leaf, remains the most verifiable choice.
