Are thermal receipts toxic? A calm look at BPA and BPS

Are thermal receipts toxic to handle?
The measured answer is that thermal receipt paper often carries a bisphenol on its surface that can transfer to your skin, so it is a real exposure route worth understanding, but for most people the amount from occasional shopping is small rather than dangerous. Thermal paper produces its print without ink by using a heat-sensitive coating, and that coating needs a chemical called a color developer, which for years was bisphenol A (BPA) and is now often bisphenol S (BPS). Crucially, the developer sits on the surface as a loosely bound free powder rather than being locked into the paper, which is why it rubs off onto fingers so readily. Studies have measured this skin transfer and shown it rises when the skin is damp or has product on it. So the honest framing is not that a receipt is poison, but that it is a genuine, avoidable source of an endocrine-active chemical, and the people who handle receipts all day, such as cashiers, have far more reason to care than someone who touches one a few times a week.
Is BPA not already banned in receipts?
In the European Union, including Germany, yes, and this is the part many people miss. Under the EU REACH chemicals regulation, BPA has been banned in thermal paper across the bloc since January 2020 above a very low concentration limit, so receipts printed in Germany since then are supposed to be BPA-free. That is genuine progress and the result of BPA being formally recognised as a substance of very high concern for its hormonal effects. The catch is twofold. First, the ban applies to BPA specifically, not to the whole family of bisphenols, so manufacturers were free to switch to a substitute. Second, other regions did not follow the same path; the United States has no equivalent federal ban on BPA in thermal paper, so receipts there may still contain it. So whether a receipt in your hand contains BPA depends heavily on where and when it was printed, and in Europe the more relevant question now is what replaced it.
Is BPS safer than BPA?
There is no good evidence that it is, and this is the weak point in treating a BPA-free receipt as a solved problem. BPS, or bisphenol S, is the most common replacement developer, and it is structurally very similar to BPA. A growing body of laboratory research has found that BPS shows comparable hormone-disrupting activity to BPA, and because it tends to be more stable and persistent, some of that work suggests it is not the clean improvement the switch implied. It is also less studied than BPA simply because it came into wide use more recently, which means the reassurance of a long safety record is not there. Regulators have noticed: the European Chemicals Agency has moved toward restricting BPS in thermal paper as well, precisely to stop a regrettable substitution where one bisphenol is swapped for a near-identical one. The practical lesson is that a receipt labelled or assumed BPA-free may well contain BPS, so the sensible habits below are worth keeping regardless of which bisphenol is involved.
What makes receipt exposure worse?
The single most important factor is what is on your skin when you touch the paper, because it changes how much of the developer your body actually absorbs. Research has shown that handling thermal receipts with damp hands, or with hands that have hand sanitizer, lotion, or other skin products on them, sharply increases the amount of bisphenol that transfers from the paper and passes through the skin. One frequently cited study found that using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and then holding a receipt, especially before eating finger food, led to markedly higher bisphenol levels than handling a receipt with dry, clean hands. The reason is that these products help dissolve the surface powder and enhance skin penetration. Frequency and duration matter too, which is why occupational exposure among retail cashiers, who grip warm receipts for hours, is the scenario public-health researchers focus on most. For an ordinary shopper the exposure is modest, but the behaviours that amplify it, sanitizer then receipt then snack, are easy to avoid once you know them.
How do I reduce receipt exposure in practice?
This is one of the easier exposures to cut because the fixes cost nothing and fit into normal habits. The most effective step is simply to take fewer receipts: choose a digital or emailed receipt when the shop offers one, and decline the printed slip for small purchases you do not need a record of, which also chimes with the reason Germany introduced its receipt-issuing obligation in 2020. When you do handle a receipt, do it with dry hands and avoid touching it right after using hand sanitizer or applying lotion, and wash your hands before eating rather than snacking straight after shopping. Keep receipts out of contact with food, and do not let children play with them. One less obvious point matters for the environment as much as for you: thermal receipts should not go in the paper recycling, because the bisphenol coating can contaminate recycled paper that later becomes food packaging, so the general waste bin is the correct route in most areas.
