Does boiling water remove microplastics?

- Does boiling really remove microplastics?
- Partly yes, and the mechanism is the interesting part. A 2024 study in Environmental Science and Technology Letters (Yu and colleagues) showed that when hard tap water is boiled, limescale (calcium carbonate) forms and traps the plastic particles, settling out with them as sediment. In hard water this combination of boiling and then decanting or filtering off the sediment removed up to roughly 90 percent of the tiny particles in the study. The key point is that heat does not destroy the plastic; the scale binds it, which is why the effect depends heavily on how hard your water is.
- Does it work with soft water?
- Much less well, and this is the most important limitation. Because the cleaning effect relies on the limescale that precipitates out, boiling removes only a small share of particles in soft, low-mineral water, since little calcium carbonate forms to trap them. If you live in a soft-water area, boiling is not a reliable way to reduce microplastics. - Do I have to filter the water after boiling?
- Yes, that step is essential or the benefit is lost. Boiling binds the particles into flakes of scale, but those flakes stay in the water until you remove them. In the study the cooled water was passed through a simple sieve or coffee filter to hold back the sediment. Without this step you simply drink the trapped particles again. In practice that means boil, let it cool so the sediment settles, then carefully pour off or filter the clear water.
- Is boiling better than a water filter?
- Not really; it is more of a free partial fix for hard water. Boiling costs nothing and needs no equipment, but it only reliably removes particles in hard water, uses energy, and does not give you ready-to-drink cold water for daily use. A good filter, such as activated carbon plus fine filtration or a reverse osmosis system, works regardless of water hardness and delivers filtered water continuously. For many households boiling is a useful stopgap, but a suitable filter is the more dependable long-term answer.
- What is the easiest way to reduce microplastics in drinking water?
- For most people a good filter is the most practical step, backed up by a few habits. A filter fine enough for the job reduces particles regardless of how hard your water is and gives you drinkable water at any time.
