Microplastics in the body: what is documented and what reduces it

Are there really microplastics in the human body?
Yes, and this is no longer in doubt. A 2022 study in Environment International (Leslie et al., n=22) detected plastic particles in the blood of 17 of 22 healthy donors, the first quantification of microplastics in human blood. A 2021 study in the same journal (Ragusa et al.) found microplastics in human placental tissue. Since then particles have been reported in lung tissue, in stool, and in arterial plaque. Detection means the particles reach and persist in the body; it does not by itself prove they cause disease. The science has firmly moved past the question of whether microplastics get into us, to the harder question of what they do once there.
How do microplastics get into the body?
Through three main routes, and ingestion is the best documented. We swallow particles in food and drink, with bottled water a notably high source: a 2024 study in PNAS (Qian et al.) estimated around 240,000 plastic particles per liter of bottled water, mostly nanoplastics. We also inhale particles from indoor air and household dust, which is why ventilation matters. A smaller share may pass through skin contact, though this route is least supported. Hot, fatty foods stored or heated in plastic increase how much migrates into what we eat. Identifying the route matters because it tells you which changes actually lower exposure.
Can the body get rid of microplastics, and can you 'detox' them?
The body does clear a meaningful share of what it takes in, mainly through the gut: studies that find microplastics in stool show the digestive tract eliminates many ingested particles. The honest caveat is that there is no proven medical detox, supplement, or cleanse that removes microplastics already lodged in tissue, and we will not pretend otherwise. Products marketing a microplastic detox are ahead of the evidence. What is supported is reducing intake so the body's normal clearance can keep pace, and supporting general elimination through adequate fiber and hydration, which is sensible regardless. Be skeptical of any product promising to flush plastics from your blood or organs.
Does having microplastics in your body cause symptoms or illness?
There is no recognized set of symptoms attributable to microplastics, and anyone selling a test for microplastic illness is ahead of the science. The most serious finding to date is a 2024 study in the New England Journal of Medicine (Marfella et al., n=257) reporting that people with microplastics in their artery plaque had a 4.5 times higher rate of cardiovascular events over about 34 months. That is an association in one group of patients, not proof of cause, and the authors are explicit about that limit. The WHO's 2019 review found no clear evidence of risk from microplastics in drinking water at current levels while calling for more data. The reasonable summary: documented presence, plausible mechanisms, unproven direct illness.
What actually reduces microplastics in the body?
Lowering intake from the highest-exposure routes, since reducing what goes in is the lever you control. Filter your tap water if your supply warrants it, and cut back on bottled water, which testing shows is a large source. Avoid heating or storing hot, fatty food in plastic or cling film, and favor glass or stainless steel. Reduce soft-plastic food packaging where convenient. Ventilate and dust your home to lower the airborne and dust routes. These few changes target the documented pathways rather than chasing every trace. Should I be alarmed that microplastics are in my body?
Concern is reasonable; alarm is not, and holding both honestly is the point. Microplastics are now near-universal in human populations, the most worrying findings are associations rather than proven cause, and the body clears a real share of what it ingests. Panic does not lower your exposure; a few targeted habits do. Treat this as a documented environmental exposure worth reducing through practical swaps, not as an emergency requiring drastic measures or unproven detox products. That posture matches what the regulatory bodies, the EPA and the WHO, actually say: keep researching, and reduce exposure where it is straightforward to do so.
