Is Made In cookware non-toxic? A calm, evidence-led verdict

Is Made In cookware non-toxic?
For most of its range the answer is a confident yes, because Made In's core lines are uncoated materials with nothing to fail. Its stainless clad, carbon steel, and enamelled cast iron pans have no nonstick coating at all, so there is no PTFE or PFAS layer to scratch, chip, or overheat. The one line that needs the usual caveat is its nonstick, which is a coated aluminium pan. Made In states its nonstick is free of PFOA, PFOS, and PFBS, and PFOA has been phased out of nonstick manufacturing industry-wide since around 2015, so that claim is credible but is also true of almost all modern nonstick. Does Made In cookware contain PFAS or Teflon?
Only its nonstick line does, and even there the honest picture is nuanced. Made In's stainless clad, carbon steel, and enamelled cast iron are entirely coating-free, so they contain no fluoropolymers whatsoever. Its nonstick pans use a PTFE-based coating, and PTFE is a fluoropolymer that sits within the wider PFAS family as the US EPA defines it. The brand states the coating is free of PFOA, PFOS, and PFBS, which are specific regulated compounds, but PFOA-free does not mean PFAS-free, because PTFE itself is a PFAS. The reassuring part is that an intact PTFE surface used below its degradation temperature is generally considered stable and is not a documented health hazard; the risk with any nonstick is a scratched or overheated coating. If you want zero fluoropolymers in the house, choose one of Made In's uncoated lines rather than its nonstick.
Is Made In's nonstick coating safe to use?
Used sensibly, yes, and the caveats are the same as for any nonstick rather than anything specific to the brand. The concern with PTFE nonstick has never been the intact coating at normal cooking temperatures; it is overheating an empty pan, which can cause the coating to break down and release fumes, and cooking on a coating that has already scratched or flaked. Made In's nonstick is a mid-to-premium coated aluminium pan, so it should last longer than a budget supermarket pan, but every nonstick coating is a consumable with a finite life. Keep it on medium or lower heat, never preheat it empty, use wood or silicone utensils, hand-wash it, and replace it once the surface is visibly worn. Treated that way it is safe; treated as an heirloom it is not, which is why we suggest pairing it with an uncoated workhorse.
Is the enamelled cast iron and carbon steel line a concern?
These are among the calmest materials you can cook on, with only small and well-understood caveats. Made In's enamelled cast iron has a glass-based enamel surface that is inert and does not react with food; the main thing to check on any enamelled pot is that the enamel is intact and, if you are cautious, that the maker publishes lead and cadmium testing for the coloured exterior. Carbon steel is essentially a lighter cousin of cast iron: bare iron that you season with oil to build a natural nonstick patina, so the only substance in contact with food is iron and cooked-on oil. The one genuine consideration for both is that bare and enamelled iron can add small amounts of dietary iron to acidic foods, which is a benefit for most people and only relevant to those advised to limit iron.
Is Made In a safe brand to buy?
Yes, and it is one of the easier brands to recommend because most of its catalogue avoids coatings altogether. Made In sells largely uncoated stainless clad, carbon steel, and enamelled cast iron, all materials whose safety is well established and that have nothing to wear through. It discloses its manufacturing partners and the specific PFAS compounds its nonstick excludes, which is more transparency than many social-media cookware brands offer. The one area where we would like more detail is published third-party lead and cadmium testing on the enamelled exterior and full per-line coating chemistry on the nonstick. None of that makes it a brand to avoid; it simply means that if you want the most verifiable option, you buy its stainless or carbon steel rather than its nonstick.
What should I buy from Made In if I want the most non-toxic option?
Start with the uncoated lines and add a coated pan only if you want easy egg release. For a lifetime pan with nothing to fail, Made In's stainless clad is the workhorse: it takes high heat and metal utensils and never sheds a coating. Carbon steel is the next step for anyone who wants a lighter naturally nonstick surface built from seasoned oil, and enamelled cast iron is ideal for braises and sauces. If you genuinely want nonstick convenience, buy a single coated pan for eggs with your eyes open about replacing it, and keep it on low-to-medium heat.
