How to avoid microplastics: the changes that actually matter

Can you actually avoid microplastics completely?
No, and any guide that promises otherwise is selling something. Microplastics are in rain, soil, table salt, seafood, and the air indoors. A 2019 review commissioned by WWF and carried out by the University of Newcastle estimated people may ingest on the order of a credit card's worth of plastic per week, a figure later debated as too high, but the underlying point holds: exposure is ubiquitous. The realistic goal is to cut your largest and most controllable sources, not to reach zero.
What is the single biggest source of microplastics in food?
For most people it is plastic in contact with hot or fatty food, and bottled water. A 2024 study in PNAS (Qian et al.) used a new imaging method to count nanoplastics in bottled water and found roughly 240,000 particles per liter, around 10 to 100 times more than earlier estimates that only counted larger microplastics. Heating food in plastic containers also drives migration: a 2023 study in Environmental Science and Technology found microwaving plastic containers released millions of microplastic and billions of nanoplastic particles per square centimeter. Switching bottled water for filtered tap water in glass or steel, and never microwaving in plastic, are the two highest-leverage moves.
Does boiling water remove microplastics?
In hard water, partly. A 2024 study in Environmental Science and Technology Letters (Yu et al.) found that boiling hard tap water caused dissolved calcium carbonate to crystallize and trap microplastics, removing up to about 80 to 90 percent when the resulting scale was filtered out. The effect was much weaker in soft water, which has little mineral content to form the scale. Boiling is a cheap partial measure for hard-water households, but a certified filter is the more reliable route. We cover which filters work in our water-filter guide.
Do plastic cutting boards shed microplastics into food?
Yes, measurably. A 2023 study in Environmental Science and Technology (Yadav et al.) estimated that chopping on a polyethylene or polypropylene board can release tens of millions of microplastic particles per person per year, with the amount depending on chopping style and board material. The researchers noted the toxicological significance is still unclear, which is the honest caveat. Still, a wood or end-grain board removes this source entirely at low cost, which is why it is on our list.
Are microplastics actually harmful to health?
The exposure is documented; the health effect is still being established. A 2024 study in the New England Journal of Medicine (Marfella et al., n=257) found microplastics and nanoplastics in the carotid artery plaque of about 58 percent of patients, and those patients had a 4.5 times higher rate of heart attack, stroke, or death over roughly 34 months. This is an association, not proof of cause, and the authors say so. Regulators including the EFSA have concluded current evidence does not allow a full risk assessment yet. We treat reducing exposure as a reasonable precaution, not an emergency.
Do tea bags release microplastics?
Many do. A 2019 study in Environmental Science and Technology (Hernandez et al.) found that a single plastic tea bag steeped at 95 degrees Celsius released about 11.6 billion microplastic and 3.1 billion nanoplastic particles into the cup. A 2024 study in Chemosphere confirmed that polypropylene, nylon, and cellulose tea bags all shed particles when brewed. Loose-leaf tea with a stainless steel infuser, or paper bags confirmed plastic-free by the brand, avoids this entirely.
